Ferus, ConocoPhillips open new CO2 plant

Gary Park

Privately held Ferus Gas Industries Trust and ConocoPhillips Canada have opened a new carbon dioxide liquefaction facility in southeastern Alberta — one of five Ferus is building in Alberta this year. The C$11 million plant near Medicine Hat will help ease a shortage of liquid CO2, which is used to complete natural gas wells and in miscible flood projects to enhance oil recovery from reservoirs.

The plant is alongside the giant Empress gas plant, operated by ConocoPhillips.

It will clean and liquefy 165 tonnes per day of industrial grade CO2 and capture 150 tonnes of sulfur, reducing emissions into the atmosphere by 27 tonnes.

The facility has easy access to southeastern Alberta and southwestern Saskatchewan, two of the liveliest energy areas in Western Canada.
