BP, Phillips donate to University of Alaska Foundation

by The Associated Press

BP and Phillips Petroleum presented the University of Alaska Foundation with checks totaling $2.5 million Dec. 6.

The donations are the first under terms of the companies’ agreement with the state last year during the takeover of Atlantic Richfield Co. by BP Amoco.

Contributions in future years will vary with production and price of oil.

BP’s contribution was $1.449 million. Phillips added $1.088 million.

UA President Mark Hamilton said he would recommend the university use the money to develop a center to perform research and prepare workers for Alaska jobs.

“A prime example of a focus for the center would be research and work force preparation for the design, construction and operation of the natural gas pipeline likely to be constructed in the coming years,” Hamilton said.
