ATP resurrects Anadarkos deepwater Gulf of Mexico Gomez prospect

Petroleum News

Exploration and production independent ATP Oil & Gas has resurrected Anadarko Petroleum's Gulf of Mexico deepwater prospect Gomez. The company said recently that it acquired a 99 percent stake in the 1997 discovery and would develop it as a possible tie-back to nearby developments, including Shell's Mars platform.

Gomez, located in 3,000 feet of water on Mississippi Canyon Block 711, was originally drilled by Union Pacific Resources which was later acquired by Anadarko. The discovery well reportedly found up to 140 million barrels of mostly oil reserves but was never pursued by Anadarko. The lease now contains three temporarily abandoned wells.

ATP said Sept. 2 that it expects to use a similar development plan at Gomez that it's currently using at its producing Ladybug deepwater project at Garden Banks 409.

Anadarko will retain a 1 percent working interest in Gomez.
