Houston Contracting earns Arctic Green Star

The Houston Contracting Co. facility in Deadhorse has earned an Arctic Green Star Award for environmental stewardship.
To earn the award, a business must adopt a Green Star policy, create a Green Star team, assess waste reduction, develop employee participation incentives and implement at least six measurable programs and procedures to reduce waste, energy use and pollution.
Among the programs implemented by Houston’s Deadhorse facility are: segregating, recycling and reusing materials; replacing toxic cleaners with non-toxic or less toxic alternatives; double-checking equipment and vehicle maintenance and coding procedures for review of failure and waste; recycling used oil and burning it for energy recovery.
Houston is part of Natchiq Inc., a subsidiary of Arctic Slope Regional Corp.
The Alliance administers Arctic Green Star, and the award was presented at a meeting of The Alliance Feb. 23.
