The Joint Pipeline Office said March 17 that a memorandum of agreement has been signed between Kenai Kachemak Pipeline LLC, the commissioner of the Department of Natural Resources and the Alaska State Historic Preservation Officer for construction of the pipeline. The agreement covers monitoring by an archaeologist, inadvertent finds, human remains, reporting requirements and an archaeology fund. JPO said Kenai Kachemak Pipeline LLC will provide a $50,000 grant to the Kenai Peninsula College of the University of Alaska Anchorage.
The grant is to further archaeological and related anthropological research and education on the western Kenai Peninsula; to fund research activities such as excavation, analysis, synthesis and preparations of reports for education and training of anthropology students and Native Alaskans through cooperative efforts between KKPL and UAA and indigenous organizations such as the Kenaitze Indian Tribe I.R.A. The grant will be given as a one-time payment directly to the Kenai Peninsula College.
The Alaska State Historic Preservation Officer will set up a separate agreement with the pipeline company and UAA to stipulate fund expenditure procedures and review of projects.
