DGGS doing shallow seismic shoot at Fort Yukon

Petroleum News Alaska

The state Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys has begun a high-resolution shallow seismic survey shoot in Fort Yukon to image the coal encountered in a 1994 climate hole drilled by the U.S. Geological Survey.

Jim Clough of the division said in Anchorage earlier in the year that the presence of the coal suggested the possibility of shallow coalbed methane.

The shoot, through a cooperative agreement with the Kansas Geological Survey which owns the mini-vibrator being used for the survey, will be done along the road system, he said, and will provide an opportunity to see if the approach works well. Clough told PNA at the end of March that the study, expected to take about two weeks, was getting under way with transportation of the mini-vibrator into Fort Yukon.
