Q. What is the official name of your company?

A. Spartan Engineering Inc.

Q. What do you most want people to know about your company?

A. Spartan provides engineering, design, mapping, construction management, inspection and other services to oil and gas companies, allowing a one-stop shop to design and build both facilities and pipeline projects.

Q. Where is your company located?

A. Our corporate office is located in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Spartan has team members working in Oklahoma City, OK, Denver, CO and Minot, ND.

Q. What year was the company founded and by whom?

A. Wayne Lagorin established Spartan Engineering in January 2010. Lagorin is a native of Kenmare, ND. He received a degree from North Dakota State University as a petroleum engineer. Lagorin’s experience over the last 20 years includes building pipelines, truck unloading facilities, gas storage facilities, compression and pump stations, terminals and other facility projects. He has held titles of regional director and director of engineering with some of the leading engineering firms in the industry, and currently serves as president of Spartan.

Q. What is your company’s primary business activity?

A. Engineering and designing oil and gas facilities and pipelines

UPSTREAM: wellhead facilities, separation, dehydration, heater/treater, launcher/receiver, gathering systems, process studies; MIDSTREAM: cross county pipelines, compressor stations, pump stations, terminals & storage, metering facilities, gas dehydration, gas sweetening, power generation, pipeline rehabilitation, SCADA, fiber optics; DOWNSTREAM: gas processing, fractionation, refining, chemical plant, distribution systems.

Q. Are there important projects the company is currently a part of or has done recently?

A. NGL pipelines totaling approximately 1,050 miles, connecting the Bakken Oil Field in North Dakota to Mont Belvieu, Texas. The Spartan Instrumentation & Electrical team has recently completed work on a gas plant near Watford City, ND.

Q. How many employees does your company have?

A. We have 86 professionals and growing.

Q. Describe the equipment your company uses and are there any new equipment purchases planned?

A. The software and equipment that Spartan uses are state-of-the-art and Spartan has also developed in-house software to provide our customers with the best information available to manage the engineering and construction projects. Some of these include: Meraki, Ajera – Project Accounting Software, Primavera P6 and Risk Management, TILOS, STAAD.Pro, Hysys, VMGSim, CADWorx, Caesar II, ETAP, Compress, Pipeline Progress Management System (PPMS), Dynamic Pipeline Estimating Software (DPES), AutoCAD Civil 3D & ESRI ArcInfo, Skyline, Lightning, Global Mapper, New Century Software, Bentley.

Q. Is your company expanding any of its operations or locations?

A. Spartan is planning on opening a Denver office.

Q. Is the company changing any of its services or products?

A. Spartan is continually expanding services, such as developing our new pipeline estimating tool, Dynamic Pipeline Estimating Software (DPES) and Pipeline Progress Management System (PPMS), which is a collaborative tool for pipeline projects, and lightning software for GIS mapping.

Q. What is your company’s main strength or its edge over the competition?

A. We believe that by creating a work environment that focuses on respect, teamwork, open communication, and a “can do” work ethic 24 hours a day, seven days a week, we provide our clients and our employees with the greatest opportunity for success. The Spartan leadership and staff have a well-established industry history of performance and integrity. Combined, our team has literally centuries of experience in all facets of engineering for mainline and facility projects. Spartan Engineering focuses on midstream and downstream components of the petroleum industry, wind generation, and fiber communication. Our ties to industry leaders across the nation provide us with tremendous resources that help us deliver your project successfully. Currently, our team is working in several states, including Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, North Dakota, Texas and Oklahoma on pipeline and facility projects.

Q. What new markets, clients or projects did your company attract in the last year?

A. Spartan has been working on gathering systems, gas plants, transmission NGL pipelines, gas compression, gas processing, skid design and many facility and pipeline projects.

Q. What is the most challenging work/contract the company has undertaken? 

A. Several projects in their own way have been exciting to see develop, such as the building of a large diameter butane sphere, two NGL pipeline projects simultaneously with a total of approximately 1050 miles, and the I&E work on a gas plant project.

Q. What are the biggest obstacles to completing work your company undertakes?

A. Each project seems to have its own biggest obstacle, with the following issues coming to mind; effective communication to ensure goals and objectives are aligned; vendor manufacturing drawings and schedules to meet client expectations on deliveries of equipment and materials; permit and regulatory schedules.

Q. What do you see as your company’s biggest challenge in the next five years?

A. Attracting and maintaining top industry talent by aligning constant work flow to allow for job continuity and salary requirements.

Q. Does your company have an anniversary or other landmark event coming up?

A. Spartan will be 4 years old in January of 2014.

Q. What is your company’s safety record? What steps does the company take to ensure a safe work environment?

A. Spartan has never had a safety incident. We have monthly training on safety topics and have a continuous attitude toward maintaining safety at the workplace and in our designs.

Q. Has your company been involved in any community projects or charity events?

A. Spartan has taken part in and sponsored many industry events such as: Pipeliners Clay Shoot in Houston, TX as well as Tulsa, OK, Goose Fest in Kenmare, ND, Crawfish Boil, Tulsa Area United Way Golf Tournament, in Tulsa, OK, and many others.

Q. Have you received any industry awards or recognition?

A. Yes, Spartan is very proud of our “2012 Engineering Company of the Year Award” from the Rocky Mountain Oil and Gas Awards. It was a great honor to have the Oil and Gas Awards recognize our team for their continuous efforts and hard work.

The Oil and Gas Awards have recently announced that Spartan Engineering is a finalist for the “2013 Midcontinent Oil and Gas Award”. The awards ceremony will be, held in Oklahoma City, OK. We are very pleased and honored to sit amongst the other 54 nominated companies.
