Providing coverage of Alaska and northern Canada's oil and gas industry

Arctic Oil & Gas Directory: One-day course set on basics of Alaska’s oil and gas industry

In his lengthy career as a petroleum geologist and project manager in Alaska, Arlen Ehm has accumulated an extensive knowledge of the state’s oil and gas industry. On Oct. 12 he will share his knowledge as an experienced explorationist with others, in the first of several seminars.

This one-day seminar, “Alaska Oil & Gas Exploration 101,” will be an introduction to the oil and gas industry in general and Alaska’s oil and gas industry in particular, with a focus on the exploration side of the business.

It will cover everything from basin geology, land ownership and leasing, to the players, project economics, permitting, logistics, drilling, well control and results.

The other end of the business — production — will also be touched on, including an introduction to Alaska’s oil and gas fields and their operators.

The seminar, which will be held at the Petroleum Club of Anchorage, “will focus on the basic functions of the industry as it utilizes scientific evaluation methods combined with physical exploration operations to find and produce its product,” Ehm said.

Of special importance will be the “manner in which these operations are carried out in the onshore and offshore areas of Alaska,” including the types of drilling rigs needed for different geologic targets and environments.

Project economics, taxes and hiring will also be covered, as well as the impact of the industry on the state’s economy.

It’s a perfect course for Alaska’s lawmakers and administrators, journalists, people in the industry who have a lot of knowledge about only a specific part of the business, environmentalists, and newcomers to the state.

Alaskan Seminars, which specializes in oil and gas topics, was the product of years of thought and planning, Ehm said.

The Oct. 12 session will run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the doors opening at 7:30. Lunch at the Petroleum Club is included in the fee of $495 per person, or $475 per person if more than one person attends from the same company, association or agency.

For more information on the seminar visit Ehm’s website, www.alaskanseminars.net ; or contact him via email at [email protected]; or by phone in Anchorage at 907 333-8880 or 907 230-8144.
